The Watch That Ends the Night is a cocktail bar and lounge inspired by Canadian literature and late-modern design in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

The visual identity is based upon paperback novels of the mid-20th century, with a moon/sun logo representing the change of night to day, and type styles fitting of eclecticism in the 1950s.

The finishes and materials are inspired by the same time period, while maintaining an overall contemporary aesthetic that is not out of place with the new development The Watch is located in. Mahogany, painted steel, dark quartz and graphic wallpaper all help achieve this balance.

The owners wanted a space that could be considered welcoming and casual, while at the same time maintaining a level of elegance. In pursuing these goals, we developed a layout and furniture scheme that is reminiscent of a hotel lobby bar- creating several spaces within to be functional for solo guests, or larger groups, and offering multiple types of seating and orientation.
