Clementine is an intimate cocktail bar in Edmonton’s Oliver neighbourhood. The partners had a plethora of ideas about the space, which we distilled into a coherent design direction focussing on how they wanted the experience to feel: elegant, traditional, and warm. Inspired by themes of nature, our concept for the bar is a modern interpretation of early 20th-century French Art Nouveau.

We developed a series of three custom logo marks: a wordmark, a monogram, and a clementine tree. The portrait format of the monogram is well-suited to the business card design and the carved wooden shop sign. The implementation of the tree mark can be found on the foil embossed and handbound menu covers, as well as the gold window gilding. We used period specific type pairings and custom designed graphics for the painted entry mirror and WC doors, and the menu design.

For the interior design, we implemented the natural Nouveau style while utilising more contemporary materials and techniques. The cabinet doors and metal dividers were manufactured locally based on custom patterns that we designed. We sourced handprinted wallpaper and hand-glazed tile from American companies specializing in accurate reproductions of 19th and early 20th century products. The light fixtures, furnishings, and finishing materials and colours all support the message and identity of the space.
